Patch cords need to meet the TIA/EIA-568-B.2_ standards for data transmission for Ethernet or you run the risk of forfeiting peak transmission performance in you network. The cost of manufactured compliant patch cords is very low but the resulting cost of using non-compliant cords can be very high. Many times I see network personals making patch cords for cat6 cabled networks but never testing the patch cord unless there is a continuity problem (Hard failure). Performance factors such as cable lengths, NEXT, FEXT and Return Loss should be considered in the performance of a patch cord before using it on a network.

You may say that it’s not a big deal to let someone hop on your WI-FI and use it to gain access to the internet. But there are those out there that scan the airwaves for unprotected networks so that they can use then for purpose of lunching viruses, DOS “Denial of Service” attackes. Using someone else’s network makes it hard for these perpetrators to be located. Any trace of their criminal activity by the authorities will only lead to the IP address that the ISP has assigned the broadcasting router of the network. Finding the person or persons behind the attack is almost impossible. Here a few things recommend you do to keep your network safe:

Change the default setting on your router

Disable SSID broadcast

Turn off your network when not in use

MAC address filtering

Use Encryption

By Laurie Stephens

I want to preface this post that I wasn’t a recycer before and I really didn’t get it on just how important it is to help out the environment but since I have started composting I understand the connection between nature and our impact on it. Now, I do everthing I can to make a difference either by using less, choosing a product that has less packaging, or that it can be recycled after it’ been used, choosing rechargable batteries that that are used after a charge vs just tossing into the trash after the charge is gone I can state that sometimes you won’t have batteries if you aren’t proactive in keeping some charged.

We have replaced our appliances with Energy Star rating, going with front loaders on both the washer and dryers which not only use less energy but less soap and water. Blanketing the water heater and the list increases as I need replacements.

After cleaning out our I car garage, I know unheard of now a days but 1929 two car garages were unheard of, anyway after finding all sorts of treasures from 1930 in there we now have 5×7 trailer full of recyclable metal, and old computers and electronic parts. Trying to work on being green I found that the Goodwill locations partnered with Dell and you can drop off almost all forms of electronics, computer parts or whole units, power cords, and speakers and cell phones.

“Goodwill’s Reconnect program has the potential not only to divert environmentally dangerous products from the solid waste stream but also to provide new opportunities for disabled citizens throughout Northwest Ohio” said Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur.

“Goodwill Industries of Northwest Ohio is very happy to begin the operational phase of our partnership with Dell,” said Bob Huber, Goodwill’s President and CEO. “Responsible recycling of e-waste is critical to our environment and we are excited to offer this program to the communities we serve. As the pilot for other Ohio Goodwills, we join Michigan and other Goodwill/Dell Reconnect partners around the country in this beneficial community effort while supporting Goodwill’s mission and creating new jobs.”

If you have an old PC or any electronic parts you want to recyclce goto reconnectpartnership.com which is managed by Dell and Goodwill Industries, enter your zip code and the locations that that accepts the equipment will be listed. Also , Goodwill can help you with how to clean your computer of all it’s data and personal information see
http://www.goodwill.org/page/guest/about/howweoperate/donations/tipsfor.

If care to clean your computer yourself , for PCs, click here to download Active Erase, a free Windows disk cleaning software available on c|Net’s Download.com.

Data cable too can be recycled for the copper in it. You can google for recycling metal and wire. So far I have haven’t had to do that since we have individual who has taken all my wire and make made some money off of it.

We also got left over fluorescent light bulbs which need to be recycled because of the mercury in them. In our area there is a company called Recycles that allows you to drop them off free of charge. They also take paints, stains. Antifreeze, batteries and just about everything that you know shouldn’t go in the trash. Look under your cities website to find a recycling location near you.

Don’t forget that a lot of the items you may have around the house can be donated to schools or churches and community centers. We had children tapes and a small TV that a children’s organization took, and the vets have a pickup service that you can use on line to schedule a pickup can’t be any easier. It is a tax right off also which sweetens the post a little.

Schools will take extra paper, ink cartridges, binders. call your local school system to find out what they can use.

With just a little effort we can be better stewards of our planet.

More recycle companies

By Chris Robertson

Today, businesses are increasingly rely on video surveillance systems. But how do you choose the best CCTV system, camera, or DVR? Read on to learn the steps to take in choosing the right video surveillance system for your needs.

CCTV Objectives

The first step in designing a CCTV system is to determine the following:

* How many cameras are required?

* What are the key fields of view?

* What are your recording requirements?

* What are the lighting conditions at each camera location?

* Where do you need live video monitoring?

* How long do you need to keep the video files?

Security Camera

The types of security camera you choose depend upon whether they’ll be used indoors or outdoors, during the day and/or night, and where they will be mounted.

Indoor Dome Camera: In nine out of ten instances, and indoor dome camera is used for general indoor applications. It’s typically mounted on the ceiling, and can be configured for standard color, day/night, or infrared.

Box Camera: Box cameras are usually sold independent of lenses, which are mounted to provide flexibility for different fields of vision. Box cameras can be mounted alone or in an enclosure.

Outdoor Dome Camera: Common for locations that have entry and exit points with limited night lighting, outdoor dome cameras typically have hard shell vandal-proof casings and a variety of lens options.

Day/Night Camera: For low light conditions, the day/night camera is the best choice. During the day, the camera records in standard color, then switches to a low-lux black and white mode at night.

Infrared Camera: When there is no available light, an infrared camera is the way to go. Infrared LEDs are automatically illuminated and the camera records in black and white mode, offering camera views in complete darkness.

PTZ Camera: A pan-tilt-zoom camera gives the operator the ability to view and zoom in all directions. The CCTV operator can set the camera to automatically rotate to different fields of vision. Plus, a PTZ camera can include optional applications that dynamically track objects in defined areas.

Digital Video Recorder

DVRs are integral to the success of any CCTV project. With higher video resolution, data compression, and faster recording speeds, DVRs are better than every. Professional DVRs allow for network or remote monitoring of CCTV video. With video distribution across LANs, WANs, and the Internet, the DVR is also used for business systems monitoring.

Choosing the correct DVR means answering the following questions:

* How many cameras do you have?

* What recording speed do you require?

* How long do you need to keep the recordings?

* Where will the DVR system be located?

* Do you have remote monitoring requirements?

The most important aspect of a CCTV system layout is the location of the DVR. It is the lifeline of the CCTV system, so must be kept in a secure location, preferably in a lockbox.

Leading Brands

Nuvico and GeoVision are leading brands for cameras and DVRs. With a Nuvico camera, you have many choices, and both Nuvico and GeoVision offer superior DVRs. Complete CCTV systems are also available with four cameras, eight cameras, or 16 cameras, depending on your needs. These systems often feature a Pentium-based Dell computer, a GeoVision DVR, and Samsung CCTV cameras.

Whichever CCTV system you choose, remember to ask yourself important questions about location, lighting conditions, and the length of time you need to keep the video files. Once you have those answers, it will be much easier to find the right CCTV system to fit your needs.

I had heard the radio ads about carbonite online backup but had never used it. What got me interested was a client called me to get my opinion about carbonite online backup and I had be honest and tell him that there was a lot of those web companies offering online backup of your data for a fee and that I didn’t know if one was any better than the other.

My client was not the type to be swayed by the latest gimmick and fad so I ask him what interest him about cabonite online backup. He reminded me that I had over the years did a great job keeping his computer running good but there was that one time that he lost his hard drive from a virus and that recovery of a manuscript of the last book he was writing was most destroyed. This meant over a year of his work was almost lost and he felt that he would give cabonite online backup a try because it was only $55 a year and it was worth the peace of mind to know that he had a second backup plan.

I couldn’t blame him for wanting an additional protection beside the backup plan I set him up with because it did fell when it can time to restore his data. So I told him go for it and call me back in few weeks and let me know how it works. In the mean time I did my investigation of cabonite online backup and here is what I learned.

By default, Carbonite backs up everything in your Documents and Settings folder. Carbonite costs only $54.95/year per computer no matter how much you need to back up. No hidden fees. No limits on backup storage capacity.

We have been asked this question a lot from Clients: Which cable should I use in my network Cat 5, Cat 5e or Cat 6? Let’s get that answered once and for all in the NetService blog. Here is what our many years of installing miles of Cat 5, Cat 5e and Cat 6 cables over the years. You can can find a lot of information on the web about cat 5, cat 5e and cat 6 but most of it doesn’t answer that one often time simple question for the end-user. Which cable do I use for the job I have?

Case Study: High noise environment with long cable runs

Solution: Cat 6 Cable

Netservices received a call from our friend Andy Ammann at Falcon Technologies, Inc. of St Louis to assist one of his client’s with a network cable installation. Falcon is a leading distributor of Voice and Data products. His client was in a time crunch since they were to go on line with a new ERP system within the week.

From our survey of the building we knew going in that we faced two major concerns: long cable runs that exceeded the 100m distance and a high noise environment . The distance problem was solved by installing intermediate equipment cabinets in the plant and by using uplink cables to the main computer room. To reserve Plant floor space the cabinets were suspended 24ft above the floor with Unistrut.

The problem for the noise environment was resolved by using the right cost effective media (cable) for the uplinks and station runs. We chose the Landmark-1000 cat 6 cable by Berk-Tek.

The LANmark-1000 Cat 6 cable is capable of transmitting applications that extend to 250 MHz and with best of the breed crosstalk parameters at four DB it improves signal to strength which makes it less vulnerable to RF noise interference. This was the reason this Cat 6 cable was selected because the machinery in the manufacturing areas of the faculty when in operation would cause interference to any electronic devises nearby. This played havoc with the old ERP system’s employee time clocks and computers. This Cat 6 cable operates very well at long distances. Many of the cable runs in this 100,000 sq. ft. of building would exceed the 100m limited on the Ethernet runs.

Case Study: Commercial printing company needs to transmit large image files to printing presses.

Solution: Cat 5e Cable

This company was really looking for a cost effective gigabite network that would complement the Cisco SGE2010 Ethernet Switch they intended to bring on line.

The length of the cable runs on this project did not present a problem. The distance of any of the cable runs on this network was less then 100m (325ft). The 100m ls the standard as defined in TIA/EIA-568-B.2-2001 which you have to adhere to when cabling for Ethernet networks, so don’t have cable runs over 100 m. This also includes the patch cords, if they are used in the connection of hardware to the cable run. Cat 5e cable was an excellent choice for use because it is rated for 1000BASE-T (gigabit).

If you know anything about cloud computing you know that if you were to ask 10 people what it means you will get 10 different answers most likely.I found a good place for some good practical information about the cloud. While googling the other day I can across an event being held at the Savvis Headquarters in St Louis Missouri called CloudCamp.

It’s an event in an Unconference format held around the US and other Countries. This is how CloudCamp defines itself: "Cloudcamp is an Unconference where attendees can exchange ideas, knowledge and information in a creative and supporting environment, advancing the current state of cloud computing and related technologies. As an informal, member-supported gathering, we rely entirely on volunteers to help with meeting content, speakers, meeting locations, equipment and membership recruitment. We also have corporate sponsors that provide financial assistance with venues, food, drink, software, services and other valuable donations". The big sponsors who make up the world of cloud computing have a lot to gain from the success of CloudCamp. More awareness by CEO, CIO, CFOs, and Application Developers to name a few mean more business in the end for the sponsors but from what I could see from the CloudCamp in St Louis it’s hands off by the sponsors. The volunteers and attendees are running the event. On the CloudCamp web site I was able to sign up to attend the St Louis one and it was free along with food and drinks. I attended it with my wife who was highly impressed with the Savvis HQ building. Although the networking before the event consisted mainly of discussion among the attendees about techie stuff she seemed to enjoy the evening. Savvis was one of the main sponsors and host. The list of other sponsors was: Appistry, Hexagrid, Oasis digital.com, Datotel and Contegix. The CloudCamp in St Louis was nothing less than a big success… great meeting with people passionate about cloud computing. It followed the true forum of an Unconference. We assembled in a concentric shaped room where people in the audience was ask by the Moderator Sam Charrington of Appistry to state any issues on their minds about the cloud and if they would then come forth And write it down so that these issues if approved by the majority would be used as the topics for the breakout sessions later in the event. It was an enjoyable 3 hours and I learned a lot about cloud computing and I think cloud computing is still trying to define itself and it’s going to l take some time. I have to say I can away with more questions about the Cloud that night then I started with but they are good questions. How can I add it to my business Netservices INC to better support IT in St Louis area
